School Governors
All state schools are required to have a Governing Body which has a responsibility for raising school standards through their three key roles of setting strategic direction, ensuring accountability and acting as a critical friend. They are the largest volunteer force in the country.
Costock School Governors
At Costock C of E Primary School, the Governing Body is made up of 10 Governors and 1 Associate Governor – this includes the Headteacher, 1 Staff Governor, 3 Parent Governors, 2 Co-opted Governors, 2 Foundation Governors and 1 Local Authority Governor. Our Governors come from a wide range of backgrounds and bring different experiences and skills to the Governing Body. We are also supported by a clerk to the Governors.
Our Governing Body

Jane Mellor, Head Teacher
Governor since: 2009
Professional background: Teaching and Management
I have been head teacher at our small, vibrant primary school since 2009. Passionate about creating a nurturing and inclusive environment, I champion a growth mindset culture, encouraging both children and staff to embrace challenges and reach their full potential. As part of the governing body, I work collaboratively to shape the school’s vision and strategy, ensuring it reflects our values and meets the needs of our community.
What does the Governing Body do?
The Governing body meets twice per term to discuss and monitor progress, with the final meeting of the year being a reflection of the year and a focus on the school improvement plan for the next year.
Governors also regularly visit the school to meet with subject leads and staff to find out more about their action plans for teaching the pupils. We review and approve the school’s budget and financial results throughout the year, together with school policies. Each governor commits to annual training to ensure they are fully informed in the various aspects expected for their role – this can be specific to each individual governor’s role as well as all governors undertaking mandatory courses such as safeguarding.
