The theme for this years STEM week is 'Change and Adapt', and we are using the story of Jack and the Beanstalk to facilitate the learning. The children were introduced to the concept of STEM as a whole school in the morning, and it didn’t take them long to realise that they already use lots of STEM skills in their everyday life.
In the afternoon all classes tackled their first STEM problem linked to the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Moving from classroom to classroom the school was buzzing with critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, team work and curiosity.
To finish off our first day the children came together to set up their seed race. The children were great at using prior knowledge of plants to make predictions about which seed would grow the fastest/be the strongest.
‘The seeds need to go outside because they need sunlight to grow.’ George (Twinkle)
‘The sunflower will be the strongest because it has the thickest stem’ – Joel and Miley (Year 2)
‘I’ve grown all these seeds and the broad bean took a long time to grow compared to the other seeds.’ (Year 4 pupil)
We are all excited to see where our STEM week takes us next.
